Smart homes fail for design reasons, not technology reasons
Almost every home we visit already owns smart technology. Lights that were connected two years ago and are now controlled by the wall switch again. A doorbell that sends notifications to one person in the household. Speakers from one brand, a thermostat from another, cameras from a third, each with its own app and its own account. The equipment works. The system does not, because there never was a system.
The failure is rarely the hardware. It is that products were bought individually, installed hopefully, and never tied together with a single idea of how the home should behave. When automation requires a guest to be taught, a spouse to open an app, or a teenager to remember which speaker belongs to which service, it stops being used. Unused automation is worse than none: it leaves devices online, unpatched, and unwatched.
